Eicher Motors Limited has appointed Siddhartha Lal as the new Executive Chairman of the company, heralding a new era in leadership after long serving Chairman S. Sandilya exited the company after a 25-year tenure at the helm. It particularly makes this change very special given that Lal has played an important role in turning Royal Enfield into a full-blown international player in the mid-size market rather than merely making it an ailing motorcycle division of a company.
Lal, the previous Managing Director and CEO at Eicher Motors, is credited with what could probably be regarded as one of the most extraordinary turnarounds in the history of Indian motoring. Under his leadership, Royal Enfield went from a failing brand to a cultural icon and a major player in the motorcycle industry internationally. After more than 25 years with EML in several capacities, he will now focus on energizing the strategic direction of the company in the elevated role.
As Executive Chairman, he would, for instance, concentrate on defining long-term vision for EML, driving deep consumer insights, going digital for brand building, technology adoption and coaching the next generation of leaders. His proven accolades in brand revitalization and business transformation make him well-poised for this strategy ingredient.
The company has appointed Vinod Aggarwal as Vice Chairman (Non-Executive) while B. Govindarajan takes over as Managing Director. Govindarajan, who has served for almost three decades in Eicher, will also continue as CEO of Royal Enfield. Aggarwal will retain his position of MD and CEO of VE Commercial Vehicles, the joint venture company of EML with the Volvo Group.
The board restructuring also welcomes two new independent directors: Ira Gupta, an HR advisory expert with 27 years of experience, including leadership roles at Microsoft India and GlaxoSmithKline, and Arun Vasu, a third-generation leader of the TTK family business with extensive entrepreneurial expertise. Sinha's appointment as Independent Director from February 12, 2025 is about to conclude.
Lal praised his predecessor for Sandilya's legacy as the figure firmly established Eicher Motors as one of the major players in the commercial vehicle sector in India and emerging markets. Sandilay was also praised for having supported Royal Enfield's transformation under Lal's stewardship. These leadership changes are taking place against the backdrop of Eicher Motors' robust financial performance, which has recorded a total income of INR 16,536 crores (approximately USD 2.01 billion) for FY '24. In the same period, joint venture partner VECV reported revenues of INR 21,459 crores (USD 2.58 billion).
