- Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen announces plans to step down after leading the global software giant.
- Narayen will remain chairman while Adobe begins search for a new chief executive officer.
The company said Narayen will remain in the position until the board names a replacement and will continue as chairman of the board afterward to ensure a smooth leadership transition.
Narayen, 62, has been CEO since 2007 and is widely credited with transforming Adobe from a traditional packaged-software company into a cloud-based technology leader. Under his leadership, the company introduced Creative Cloud subscriptions, expanded its digital experience business and strengthened products such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and Acrobat.
During this period, Adobe grew significantly, evolving into a global technology powerhouse with a strong presence in creative tools, digital documents and marketing solutions.
The leadership change comes as Adobe faces increasing competition and rapid shifts in the software industry driven by artificial intelligence tools. Analysts say the next CEO will play a key role in steering Adobe’s strategy around generative AI and new digital-creation platforms.
Following the announcement, Adobe shares fell more than 7% in extended trading, reflecting investor concerns about leadership transition and competition in the AI-driven creative software market.

Narayen’s message to employees
In a message to employees, Narayen emphasized that the decision marks a transition rather than a departure from the company’s mission. “This is not a goodbye by any means but a time for reflection,” he said, highlighting Adobe’s long tradition of innovation and its opportunities in the evolving AI era.
Adobe’s board has initiated a search for a successor and is evaluating both internal and external candidates to lead the company into its next phase of growth.
