Rubio Strengthens U.S. Ties with Pro-Trump Eastern European Leaders

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a diplomatic visit to eastern Europe on Sunday to strengthen relations with conservative governments in Slovakia and Hungary.
These countries have maintained friendly ties with President Donald Trump and his political movement. Rubio’s visit marked the first by a U.S. Secretary of State to Slovakia in seven years.
In Bratislava, Rubio met with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico. The talks focused on energy cooperation, defense, and NATO. These issues are becoming increasingly important due to concerns over regional security. Rubio emphasized the strong alliance between Slovakia and the U.S., stressing that the two countries work closely together on critical issues.

On Monday, Rubio was scheduled to meet Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a key ally of Trump. Orbán's government is admired by many U.S. conservatives for its restrictive immigration policies and socially conservative stances. Hungary has hosted major conservative events that attract activists from both the U.S. and Europe.
Both Fico and Orbán have clashed with the European Union over what Brussels describes as democratic backsliding and weakened rule-of-law protections. Both countries maintain economic relations with Russia, including oil and gas imports, which has drawn criticism from Washington. Rubio indicated that energy dependence and defense cooperation would be discussed in his meetings.
Rubio’s visit followed his participation in the Munich Security Conference, where transatlantic tensions over trade, migration, and defense-sharing were highlighted. European leaders have responded to U.S. criticisms by emphasizing the importance of human rights and shared strategic interests, despite disagreements on policy.
