The Democratic Alliance which prefers political right-of-centre, has once again won the parliamentary elections, yet again failing to obtain an outright majority.

Its founder Luis Montenegro assured the public he would increase investment and ensure that everyone would benefit. After his party came in second place, Pedro Nuno Santos decided to resign, as they now share the same number of seats as the Chega party.

If the results from voters in other countries are the same as they were in last year’s election, Chega could overtake the Socialists. André Ventura from Chega stated that the result brought about the end of Portugal’s two-party political system. He built his campaign around problems of immigration and corruption and it might have helped Chega that the current and previous elections were sparked by criticisms of the prime minister.

In his speech to his supporters, Montenegro acknowledged the whole family and his political family for defending him from accusations over political deals that took place prior to his party leadership and are run by his sons nowadays. The controversy that began the election occurred after the government failed a motion of no confidence. Then, Santos further stated that he did not feel Montenegro was capable of handling the role as prime minister and urged the Socialist Party to keep the issue alive.
