OpenAI Launches GPT-5, Spotlights India's Booming AI Scene

OpenAI just rolled out GPT-5, its most powerful AI model yet, at a recent event, and it’s making waves with big improvements in accuracy, speed, reasoning, and math skills.

This new model is a significant leap toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and it comes in three flavors—gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano—giving developers options to balance performance, cost, and speed. There’s also a non-reasoning version, gpt-5-chat-latest, that powers ChatGPT’s top performance.

At the launch, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, couldn’t stop talking about India’s growing role in the AI world. He called India the company’s second-biggest market after the US, adding, “It’s growing incredibly fast and could soon be our largest market.” Altman was impressed by how Indian users and businesses are embracing AI in creative ways. He shared plans to visit India in September to work with local partners, aiming to make AI more accessible and affordable for the country.

What’s exciting is that GPT-5 is available to everyone, including a free version for the first time. Altman described it as like chatting with a “PhD-level expert” on almost any topic. ChatGPT Team users can already try it out, with Enterprise and Edu customers getting access next week. Developers can tap into GPT-5 through OpenAI’s API, and there’s a souped-up GPT-5 Pro version for Team, Enterprise, and Edu users with even better reasoning. ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month) get higher usage limits, while Pro users ($200/month) enjoy unlimited access to both GPT-5 and GPT-5 Pro.
