New Zealand will hold its next New Zealand general election 2026 on Saturday, November 7, 2026 election, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced, formally setting the date for a nationwide vote that will determine the country’s next government and its policy direction.
Luxon, leader of the centre-right National Party New Zealand, said the election would give voters a clear choice on economic management, public services and governance amid domestic and global challenges. The National Party currently leads a New Zealand coalition government with New Zealand First and the ACT Party, formed after the 2023 election.
The government has prioritised inflation control, slower public spending growth and regulatory changes, while reversing several initiatives introduced by the previous administration.
- Christopher Luxon sets New Zealand general election for Nov 7, 2026
- Voters to decide future of National-led coalition in 2026 election
- Economy and public services to dominate New Zealand election campaign
These decisions have shaped debate across New Zealand politics, drawing criticism over changes affecting Māori institutions and electoral rules, including restrictions on same-day voter enrolment.
Economic conditions are expected to be central to the campaign. The New Zealand economy has faced weak growth, rising unemployment and continued strain in the Housing market New Zealand, contributing to declining public confidence and pressure on the prime minister’s approval ratings.
The opposition Labour Party New Zealand, led by former prime minister Chris Hipkins, is expected to focus its campaign on healthcare funding, housing supply and social support, while accusing the government of weakening public services and widening inequality.
The vote will be conducted under the Mixed-member proportional system, which allows voters to cast ballots for both local representatives and political parties. This system has historically made coalition-building necessary after elections.
