NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has confirmed that he held a phone conversation with Donald Trump to discuss developments linked to Greenland and security dynamics in the Arctic region.
Rutte said the two leaders are scheduled to meet later this week on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the issue is expected to feature prominently in broader strategic talks.
The discussion takes place against renewed attention on Greenland’s geopolitical importance, particularly its location along emerging Arctic shipping routes and its relevance to missile defence and surveillance infrastructure. Trump has reiterated that increased U.S. involvement in Greenland is tied to American national security interests, a position that has drawn concern from several European allies.

Trump has also announced plans to introduce new tariffs on imports from a group of European countries, including Denmark, beginning in February, linking the measures to wider disputes over security cooperation and strategic alignment. European officials have warned that such steps risk placing additional strain on trans-Atlantic economic and political relations at a time of heightened global uncertainty.
Denmark, which retains sovereignty over Greenland, has rejected any suggestion of transferring control, stressing that decisions about the territory’s future rest with Greenland and the Danish government. Danish leaders have said that Greenland is not for sale and that security issues should be handled within existing alliance frameworks.
Within NATO, the Arctic has gained prominence as climate change opens new maritime routes and intensifies competition among major powers. Several member states have increased their monitoring and defence activities in the region, citing the need to safeguard alliance interests.

Rutte has not disclosed specific details of his call with Trump but said continued engagement is essential. The Davos meeting is expected to focus on alliance cohesion, Arctic security planning, and the broader implications of recent U.S. policy signals for NATO partners.
