U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced she will resign from Congress on January 5, 2026, following a public split with President Donald Trump.
Her departure will reduce the Republican majority in the House to 218 seats, compared to 213 for Democrats.
Greene made the announcement in a post on social media, saying “loyalty should be a two-way street” and arguing that Congress has been “sidelined” under the current administration.
She said she wanted to avoid putting her district through what she called a “hurtful and hateful primary,” noting that she would not remain in office “like a battered wife” hoping circumstances “get better.”

The fallout between Greene and Trump escalated in recent weeks. Trump withdrew his endorsement after Greene pushed for the release of government files related to Jeffrey Epstein and referred to Israel’s assault on Gaza as genocide—positions at odds with the White House.

Greene, once a prominent supporter of Trump and a key voice in the GOP’s conservative wing, framed her resignation as a decision made to protect her family and her district. Her departure raises questions about party unity heading into the midterm cycle, as Republicans look to defend her seat and maintain control of the House.
