France will deploy its flagship aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean as tensions in the Middle East escalate, President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and its strike group have been ordered to move toward the Mediterranean Sea, Macron said in a televised address. The deployment follows recent US-Israel strikes on Iran and a series of retaliatory attacks across the region.
The carrier will sail with its air wing and escort vessels, including frigates and support ships. The naval group is capable of launching air operations and providing air defense operations in the region.

France has also deployed Rafale fighter jets and airborne surveillance aircraft as part of its military presence. The reinforcement comes as several countries review security measures following the escalation in the Middle East.
Macron said the deployment aims to protect strategic maritime routes and French interests in the region. Key shipping corridors including the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal, and the Red Sea shipping route are critical for global energy supplies and international trade.
France has also strengthened its presence in other parts of the region. A French frigate has been deployed to Cyprus, and French forces have intercepted drones over allied Gulf states in recent days.
Paris maintains defense agreements with several countries in the Gulf, including Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Macron said these partners remain exposed to security risks as tensions increase.
The French government is also arranging evacuation flights for French citizens who wish to leave affected areas. Authorities in France have increased security measures while monitoring potential spillover effects of the conflict.
Macron said Iran had contributed to rising tensions in the region but also criticized the United States and Israel for conducting military operations outside international law. He said France could not support actions that bypass established legal frameworks.
France has called for restraint and diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions while maintaining its military readiness.
