Macron Rejects Military Plan to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that using military force to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is “unrealistic,” calling instead for diplomacy to resolve the growing Middle East crisis.

Speaking during a visit to South Korea, Macron warned against suggestions—mainly from the United States—to use military intervention to secure the key shipping route. He explained that such an operation would likely be long, risky, and could expose vessels to attacks, including missiles and naval strikes.

The global oil supply depends heavily on the Strait of Hormuz, which carries nearly 20% of the world’s oil. Its closure, following recent tensions involving Iran, has already pushed oil prices higher and raised concerns about global economic stability.

Macron stressed that military action would not guarantee safe passage for ships and could worsen the situation. Instead, he urged countries to focus on diplomatic solutions and international negotiations with Iran to restore stability and reopen the route safely.

His comments come at a time when Western allies appear divided on how to respond. U.S. President Donald Trump has encouraged allied nations to consider stronger action, including military involvement, to ensure the strait is reopened. However, several European leaders have taken a more cautious approach, highlighting the dangers of direct conflict.

At the same time, around 40 countries are reportedly in discussions about a coordinated response to the crisis. Most of these talks are centered on diplomatic and economic measures rather than immediate military steps.

Macron also emphasized the importance of unity among allies, particularly within NATO. He warned that differing strategies and unilateral decisions could weaken long-term cooperation.

As tensions remain high, Macron’s stance reflects a broader European push toward de-escalation, prioritizing peaceful approaches and geopolitical stability, even as the world faces growing uncertainty.
