L&T Appoints Subramanian Sarma, Head of Energy Vertical, as Deputy MD

Larsen & Toubro Ltd, a leading construction and engineering company, has announced the promotion of Subramanian Sarma, the firm's whole-time director and president who oversees its large energy vertical, to the position of deputy managing director, effective April 2. Sarma has been a member of L&T's board since 2015.

The company announced through an official statement extending Sarma's time on the board until February 2028 pending approval from shareholders at the upcoming annual general meeting.

" Sarma has been instrumental in transforming our hydrocarbon and energy businesses, driving innovation, operational excellence, and global competitiveness. His elevation is well deserved, and I am confident that his leadership will further strengthen L&T’s growth trajectory," said SN Subrahmanyan, L&T's chairman and managing director, in a statement.

Sarma has made his mark, having been a veteran expert in the energy sector, particularly in hydrocarbons across West Asia. He has also seen L&T become a major strategic player in the region's vast energy industry for engineering contracts-an area once dominated by major North American and European firms.

L&T is now collaborating with oil and gas parastatals and major oil companies in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries for energy. This is under Sarma, since the company’s energy division is his second-largest vertical after infrastructure. It has most of the contracts with major oil companies, including Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil and gas company by revenue.

For the last year only, L&T has won $4 billion worth of orders from Saudi Aramco for oil exploration and refining projects. In February, the energy division of the company entered into yet another $1.5 billion contract with Saudi Aramco on a project related to carbon capture and storage.
