King's US Visit to Proceed Despite Security Concerns After DC Shooting

The state visit of King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and their delegation to the United States will move forward as planned, despite security concerns following a shooting incident in Washington DC.
Buckingham Palace confirmed on Sunday that the royal couple’s four-day visit will begin as scheduled on Monday. The decision was made after discussions between UK and US officials, who reviewed security arrangements in light of Saturday night’s incident. While the trip will continue, some events may see minor adjustments to reduce potential risks.
The concerns emerged after a gunman attempted to enter the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at a Washington hotel. According to US authorities, the suspect allegedly fired several shots while trying to gain access to the venue, causing panic and triggering an immediate security response.

Donald Trump and other senior officials were quickly evacuated from the event. Reports say the suspect, identified by US media as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was arrested at the scene. Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that investigators believe the attacker may have been targeting the president.
One Secret Service agent was injured during the incident but survived after a bulletproof vest prevented serious harm. No other injuries were reported.
Buckingham Palace said the King was “greatly relieved” to learn that the president, Melania Trump, and others present at the dinner were safe. It is believed the King and Queen privately sent their sympathies following the incident.
Security for the royal state visit was already expected to be extensive, but officials are now taking additional precautions. UK minister Darren Jones said appropriate security measures are in place, while Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stressed the importance of ensuring the monarch’s safety.
The visit comes during a sensitive diplomatic period, with ongoing discussions around UK-US relations, foreign policy tensions, and broader diplomatic relations. Despite political differences, President Trump has spoken positively about the monarchy and his long-standing respect for the King.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined other leaders in condemning the violence, calling the incident deeply shocking.
