King Charles III to Meet Pope Leo XIV in Historic Vatican Visit

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are gearing up for a special trip to the Vatican in late October 2025 to meet Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope.

This will be their first time meeting him, as the visit was pushed back from April due to the late Pope Francis’ health struggles. The trip falls during the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year, a once-in-25-years celebration of forgiveness and pilgrimage, themed “Pilgrims of Hope.” This visit is a big deal for strengthening the bond between the Catholic Church and the Church of England, which split way back in the 16th century.

As the leader of the Church of England, Charles has been to the Vatican five times before as Prince of Wales, meeting Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. Just last April, he and Camilla shared a quiet moment with Pope Francis, 12 days before his passing, which also happened to mark their 20th wedding anniversary.

Pope Leo XIV, once known as Cardinal Robert Prevost, became pope in May 2025 at 70 years old. He’s a former missionary from Peru who cares deeply about peace, justice, and tackling the ethical questions around artificial intelligence.

Charles sent heartfelt congratulations when Leo was chosen, and the Pope recently shared kind words after the passing of Katharine, Duchess of Kent, the first senior royal to become Catholic since 1994.

Even with his ongoing cancer treatment, Charles is making this two-day trip his only international stop this fall, showing how much he values building bridges between faiths and nations. More details about the visit are coming soon.
