Kim Jong Un Reappointed as North Korea's President of State Affairs

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been reappointed as president of state affairs, solidifying his position as the country’s supreme leader. The decision was made during a session of the Supreme People’s Assembly on March 22, 2026, the nation’s top legislature, which largely ratifies decisions from the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.
The reappointment places Kim at the head of the State Affairs Commission, North Korea’s highest governing body, which grants him control over the country’s policies and military.
The assembly also discussed potential amendments to the country’s socialist constitution and reviewed the government’s new five-year economic plan introduced earlier this year.
- Kim Jong Un reappointed president of North Korea, cements leadership
- North Korea’s Supreme Assembly ratifies Kim’s authority, focuses on military
- Changes in North Korea’s constitution and South Korea policy under Kim
One key focus during the assembly was North Korea’s evolving stance on South Korea. The “two hostile states” policy, which officially declares Seoul as a rival rather than a future partner in reunification, is expected to be more formally recognized in the constitution. This marks a significant shift from past rhetoric, which had emphasized peaceful reunification.
Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un’s sister, a powerful figure in the regime, was notably absent from the updated membership list of the State Affairs Commission. While some analysts speculate that her omission could signal a change in her role, others believe it may simply reflect a shift in the distribution of responsibilities within the leadership.

Kim Jong Un’s continued leadership cements his authority over both the country’s political and military spheres. His role as president of state affairs gives him sweeping powers, including control over North Korea’s nuclear arsenal and state policies. While critics argue that these political moves occur within a tightly controlled environment, where opposing voices are excluded, Kim’s dominance remains firmly in place.
