Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will visit India from July 1 to July 3 for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, marking her first official visit to the country since assuming office.

The visit is expected to further strengthen cooperation between the two nations in areas such as India-Japan relations, trade, defense, technology, investment, and regional security.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host Takaichi in New Delhi, where both leaders are expected to review the progress of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership and discuss ways to deepen collaboration in key sectors.

  • India and Japan to strengthen defense technology and investment cooperation
  • India-Japan Annual Summit to boost trade security and semiconductor collaboration

Focus on Security, Technology, and Regional Cooperation

The summit is expected to cover a wide range of strategic issues, including defense cooperation, maritime security, semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and resilient supply chains. Both countries are also likely to exchange views on developments in the Indo-Pacific region, where India and Japan continue to support a free, open, and stable maritime order.

Over the past few years, India and Japan have strengthened their defense relationship through joint military exercises, greater security cooperation, and closer coordination under the Quad alliance. The upcoming summit is expected to build on these efforts while exploring new opportunities to work together on emerging technologies and regional challenges.

The leaders are also expected to discuss ways to make supply chains more reliable and reduce dependence on single-source manufacturing, an area that has become increasingly important in recent years.

Business Leaders to Explore New Investment Opportunities

A large business delegation is expected to accompany Prime Minister Takaichi during the visit, reflecting the growing Japan investment in India. Representatives from industries such as automobiles, infrastructure, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, and digital technology are expected to participate in meetings aimed at expanding investment and business collaboration.

Japan continues to be one of India's largest foreign investors, with Japanese companies playing a major role in infrastructure development, manufacturing, transportation, and clean energy projects. The two governments are also expected to discuss cooperation in green technologies, digital transformation, and innovation-driven industries.

Earlier reports suggested that Takaichi might visit Guwahati in Assam as part of her trip, highlighting Japan's interest in India's northeastern region. However, that visit has reportedly been dropped due to scheduling constraints, and the official programme will now be limited to New Delhi.
