Italy Joins US-Led Pax Silica AI Alliance Despite Trump Rift

Italy is moving ahead with plans to join the U.S.-led Pax Silica initiative, a global effort to build secure artificial intelligence supply chains, despite recent diplomatic tensions between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. President Donald Trump.

The agreement had briefly been put on hold after Meloni and Trump clashed over Italy's position on the Iran conflict.

The disagreement prompted Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to cancel a scheduled visit to Miami, where Italy was expected to formally sign the agreement. However, officials from both sides have now confirmed that the partnership is moving forward.

Italy Puts Long-Term Technology Goals First

Italian Ambassador Armando Varricchio, who also serves as the country's special envoy for innovation, said Italy and the United States are working to sign a memorandum of understanding as soon as possible. He described the delay as temporary and said both governments remain committed to working together on artificial intelligence, technology partnership, and related innovations.

Although the formal signing was postponed, Italy still took part in the Pax Silica summit in Washington as an observer. During the event, Varricchio signed a joint declaration with representatives from Britain, Germany, Japan, India and South Korea, supporting greater international cooperation in artificial intelligence.

The latest move suggests that both Rome and Washington are separating strategic technology partnerships from political disagreements. As AI becomes increasingly important to economic growth and national security, governments are placing greater emphasis on maintaining cooperation in this field.
