Italy Halts Israel Defence Deal as Tensions Escalate

Italy has decided to pause the automatic renewal of its long-standing defence cooperation agreement, marking a noticeable shift in its stance as tensions rise over the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the move on April 14, explaining that it reflects Italy’s growing concern over recent developments in the region. The agreement, first signed in 2003 and renewed every five years, included cooperation in military training, defence technology, and equipment exchange.

In recent weeks, Italy — once seen as a strong supporter of Israel in Europe — has become increasingly critical of Israeli military actions, particularly those linked to operations in Lebanon. These developments have raised concerns in Rome about rising civilian casualties and the risk of further regional instability.
