Iran Invites Lebanon's Foreign Minister for Talks on Regional Ties

Iran has invited Lebanon’s foreign minister, Youssef Raji, to visit Tehran for discussions focused on bilateral relations and regional developments, according to a statement released by Iran’s foreign ministry on Thursday. The invitation was issued by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who said the talks would aim to reinforce cooperation and address current challenges affecting both nations.
The outreach comes at a time of heightened regional attention on Lebanon’s internal security framework, particularly regarding the status of Hezbollah’s armed wing. Lebanon’s current government, led by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, is navigating political pressure to reaffirm state authority over armed groups.
The invitation from Tehran signals continued Iranian support for Hezbollah as a key actor in Lebanon’s political and security landscape, while also presenting an opportunity for Lebanon to engage Tehran directly amid international expectations.

Recent diplomatic engagements have also included indirect steps between Lebanon and Israel. Civilian representatives from both countries joined military officials overseeing a ceasefire arrangement established in late 2024. The move was seen by regional observers as a notable, though limited, shift in a longstanding hostile relationship, potentially opening space for future political dialogue.
Iran’s invitation underscores Tehran’s intention to maintain its position as a central partner for Lebanon, especially while Western involvement continues through security and governance agreements. The Iranian statement expressed confidence that Lebanon would “overcome existing threats,” reiterating support for Lebanese sovereignty during a period of political and economic fragility.

Lebanese officials have not yet confirmed whether Raji will accept or when a visit may take place. Diplomats familiar with the matter say timing may depend on internal consultations and reactions from key regional and international partners. Any formal meeting in Tehran would likely be watched closely as an indicator of Lebanon’s diplomatic direction and Iran’s strategy in shaping Middle East alliances.
