India’s largest airline IndiGo has announced a major leadership change with CEO Pieter Elbers stepping down from his position, while company founder Rahul Bhatia returns to oversee the airline’s operations as interim head. The development marks a significant shift in leadership at the low-cost carrier amid efforts to stabilise operations following recent disruptions.

Key Highlights

  • IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers resigns; founder Rahul Bhatia returns to oversee airline operations temporarily.
  • Leadership change follows December operational crisis that led to thousands of flight cancellations across India.

The airline confirmed that Elbers’ resignation became effective March 10, 2026, with the board accepting his departure and appointing Bhatia—currently Managing Director of the company—to temporarily manage the affairs of the airline until a new chief executive is appointed.

Rahul Bhatia said in an internal message to employees, “I step into my expanded role of managing the affairs of IndiGo with a deep sense of responsibility—not only to customers and shareholders, but to every employee who powers this airline.”

Elbers, a former chief executive of KLM, had taken charge of IndiGo in September 2022, succeeding Ronojoy Dutta. His tenure saw the airline expand its network and fleet but also coincided with operational challenges that drew scrutiny from regulators and passengers.

Pieter Elbers wrote in his resignation letter, “Due to personal reasons, I hereby submit my resignation from the position of CEO of IndiGo with effect from today.”

The leadership change follows a major operational crisis in December 2025, when IndiGo faced a scheduling collapse that led to more than 4,500 flight cancellations, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across the country. The incident prompted intervention from aviation authorities and triggered an investigation into the airline’s crew-roster management and operational planning.

According to regulatory disclosures, the airline’s board acknowledged Elbers’ resignation and said Bhatia will take charge of managing operations during the transition period. The company has already begun the process of identifying a new chief executive to lead the airline in the next phase of growth.

In public remarks following the change, Bhatia indicated that restoring operational stability and strengthening service reliability would be top priorities. The co-founder, who helped build IndiGo into India’s dominant airline over nearly two decades, said the company will focus on rebuilding customer confidence and reinforcing internal processes.

Despite the leadership shake-up, IndiGo remains a dominant force in the Indian aviation market, holding over 60% share of domestic air traffic and operating one of the largest fleets in the region.

Market watchers say the transition will be closely monitored by investors and regulators as the airline seeks to restore operational efficiency and maintain its leadership in India’s fast-growing aviation sector.
