The grants worth $2.2 billion which Harvard received froze when it stood against President Trump's protest policy. Harvard filed a federal lawsuit to defend its position and received nationwide backing during protests. In a community message announcement, Harvard President Alan Garber said, "The consequences of the government's overreach will be severe and long-lasting," the Wall Street Journal reported. Garber argued that due to the funding cuts, research was at risk, including the work into child cancer, infectious disease outbreaks, and easing of injured soldiers' pain.
The educational facility received financial restrictions because of its defiance against government requirements which ignited campus unrest. Harvard presents evidence through its lawsuit that the government terminated its funding because it wants the university to accept government authority over educational programs.
The lawsuit, filed in Boston federal court, read, “The Government has not — and cannot — identify any rational connection between anti-Semitism concerns and the medical, scientific, technological, and other research it has frozen that aims to save American lives, foster American success, preserve American security, and maintain America’s position as a global leader in innovation. Nor has the Government acknowledged the significant consequences that the indefinite freeze of billions of dollars in federal research funding will have on Harvard’s research programs, the beneficiaries of that research, and the national interest in furthering American innovation and progress,” a report from The Associated Press cited.
According to the Wall Street Journal Trump intends to reduce healthcare research funding at Harvard by $1 billion while his relationship with academic institutions deteriorates. The institution of Harvard became the first to file a legal action against Trump's anti-Semitism task force because it believes the task force violates civil rights protections for academic freedom and free speech guarantees.
