Leaders of the G7 nations gathered in the French town of Evian-les-Bains on Monday for a summit shaped by growing global tensions, trade concerns, and fresh diplomatic developments in the Middle East.

The meeting comes shortly after the United States-Iran agreement aimed at ending months of conflict, placing Middle East stability and global security high on the agenda.

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed world leaders as discussions began on key global issues, including the recent U.S.-Iran deal and the ongoing Ukraine war.

Although details of the agreement between Washington and Tehran are still limited, G7 leaders are expected to discuss what it could mean for security in the Middle East, global oil markets, and international trade routes.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes — may reopen soon after months of disruption linked to tensions in the region. European countries are expected to push for coordinated efforts to keep shipping routes secure and avoid further instability.

At the same time, the war in Ukraine remains an important topic at the summit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to meet G7 leaders to seek continued military and financial support as fighting with Russia continues.

European leaders have stressed the need to maintain support for Ukraine while also exploring possible paths toward long-term peace.

Trade Frictions and China Take Spotlight

Trade and economic issues are also expected to play a major role in discussions. Several G7 countries are looking for ways to reduce dependence on China supply chains for important materials used in clean energy, technology, and manufacturing. Leaders are expected to discuss how countries can strengthen supply chains and improve economic security.

However, tensions over trade may complicate the talks. Before arriving in France, Trump warned that the United States could impose heavy tariffs on French wine if France keeps its digital tax on large American technology companies.

The warning has raised concerns among European allies already dealing with uncertainty over U.S. trade policy. French officials, however, have tried to calm concerns, saying digital taxes are not part of the official G7 agenda.

Despite differences, Macron is expected to use the summit to encourage cooperation on major global challenges and strengthen coordination among allies.

Leaders from several Middle Eastern countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Egypt, are also attending parts of the summit after playing diplomatic roles during recent regional tensions.
