France and China agreed to work together to help de-escalate the Iran conflict, the French foreign ministry said on Tuesday, as fighting in the region intensifies following U.S. airstrikes and Israeli strikes on Iran.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot spoke by phone with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday. Both sides stressed the need for a political solution and agreed to maintain close coordination to prevent further escalation.

According to the French foreign ministry, Barrot said Iran bears responsibility for the recent deterioration, citing attacks on neighboring countries and Tehran’s failure to comply with United Nations Security Council resolutions related to its nuclear program and ballistic missile program.

France also clarified that it was not involved in the recent U.S. and Israeli military operations and had no prior knowledge of the strikes.

China has condemned the U.S. attacks, calling for an immediate ceasefire and renewed dialogue. Beijing urged all parties to exercise restraint and return to negotiations to avoid a broader Middle East tensions crisis.

The latest violence has raised concerns about wider instability in the region. Iran has responded to the strikes with missile and drone attacks, increasing fears of a prolonged confrontation that could draw in more countries.

The conflict has disrupted regional security and affected global markets, particularly energy supplies. Several governments have called for calm, warning that continued escalation could have serious economic and humanitarian consequences.

France and China said diplomatic engagement remains the only viable path forward. Both countries signaled support for renewed talks aimed at reducing tensions and restoring regional stability.
