European countries have taken significant steps to strengthen their role within NATO, French President Emmanuel Macron said ahead of a key Ukraine coalition summit, as the continent looks to play a bigger part in ensuring its own security.
Macron's comments come before France and the United Kingdom host another meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, where leaders are expected to discuss continued military support for Ukraine and Europe's long-term security plans. The meeting comes as the Russia-Ukraine war continues and European nations increase their defence commitments.
Speaking after the NATO summit, Macron said European countries have made steady progress in increasing defence spending, improving military readiness and strengthening cooperation within the alliance.

He said Europe is becoming better prepared to handle security challenges while continuing to work closely with the United States through NATO.
The French president stressed that a stronger European defence should support NATO, not replace it. He noted that the alliance has adapted to the changing security environment since Russia invaded Ukraine, with member countries strengthening their armed forces and improving coordination.
Macron also highlighted growing investment in Europe's defence industry. Several countries have expanded weapons production, upgraded military equipment and increased cooperation to improve their ability to respond to future threats.
France has also increased its military contributions within NATO by deploying more troops to allied countries and investing in advanced defence technologies. Macron said these efforts reflect Europe's commitment to taking greater responsibility for its own security.
Ukraine Support Remains Priority
The upcoming Coalition of the Willing summit will focus on maintaining military and political support for Ukraine. Leaders are expected to discuss additional defence assistance, long-term security guarantees and ways to strengthen Ukraine's ability to defend itself.
Led by France and the United Kingdom, the coalition works alongside NATO by bringing together countries that are committed to supporting Ukraine. The meeting is expected to review existing military aid programmes and explore further cooperation as the conflict continues.
Macron said Europe must continue supporting Ukraine while also investing in its own defence capabilities. According to him, the current geopolitical situation makes it essential for European countries to become more capable of protecting their own interests without weakening the transatlantic alliance.
His remarks also come as discussions continue over the future role of the United States in European security. While reaffirming the importance of the transatlantic alliance, Macron said Europe should be ready to act independently whenever necessary.
In recent months, NATO members have agreed to increase defence spending and strengthen military cooperation in response to growing security challenges. European governments have also accelerated military modernisation programmes and expanded defence production to improve readiness.

The Coalition of the Willing summit is expected to build on those efforts by outlining the next phase of support for Ukraine. As the conflict shows no immediate signs of ending, European leaders are aiming to demonstrate that they are ready to take on a larger role in protecting European security while continuing to back Ukraine politically and militarily.
