HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) will pay $10 million to settle Donald Trump's lawsuit over his ban following the January 6 Capitol riots.
  • The settlement follows Musk's restoration of Trump's account in 2022 but after Trump continued legal action.
  • This is the second such settlement for Trump, following Meta's $25 million payout for similar issues on Facebook and Instagram.

X, a social media platform run by Elon Musk and formerly known as Twitter, is willing to pay out about $10 million to former President Donald Trump to settle a lawsuit entered by Trump regarding his ban on the platform after January 6, 2021; this was due to riots at the Capitol. Trump's lawsuit against Twitter and its former CEO Jack Dorsey claimed that his conservative views had been deliberately restrained.

According to Wall Street Journal, the settlement comes after Musk restored Trump's account in 2022 soon after buying Twitter and renaming it to X. But even though their personal ties are strong, Trump's lawyers decided to continue with the trial and eventually got $10 million, directly in settlement.

This settlement is the second instance of a social media platform reaching an agreement with Trump over the suspension of his accounts. Last month, Meta Platforms agreed to pay Trump $25 million to resolve a similar lawsuit concerning his bans from Facebook and Instagram.

In December, ABC News settled a defamation lawsuit with Trump for $15 million, with the amount to be donated to his future presidential foundation and museum.
