Elon Musk Describes Working on Weekends as a Superpower

Amid the growing conversation about work-life balance, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to X to describe working on weekends as a superpower.

He commented on how bureaucratic workers in the U.S. typically avoid working on Saturdays and Sundays. "Very few in the bureaucracy actually work on the weekend, so it’s like the opposing team just leaves the field for 2 days! Working the weekend is a superpower," his post stated.

He was replying to a user who remarked that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk leads, is "speedrunning government reforms."

Recent reports said that Musk sleeps at the headquarters of DOGE. He believes that his mission of efficiency and cut cost is extreme. DOGE is located in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and thus in a few steps from the White House.

Last year, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) chairman S N Subrahmanyan was criticized when he reportedly supported a 90-hour weekly schedule for employees. In a viral video apparently from an internal meeting, Subrahmanyan is seen pushing for working on Sundays. The undated clip, reportedly made available on internal administrative platforms, was shared on Reddit and drew intense criticism from users.

Commenting on Musk's remarks, Nilesh Shah, managing director of Kotak Mahindra AMC, said, "It will be interesting to see how people respond to this comment. Will he face the same meme treatment as NRM (Narayana Murthy) and SNS (Subrahmanyan), or will he receive praise simply because he's Elon Musk?"

Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, started the debate on work-life balance in India when he expressed his support for a six-day workweek, even admitting that he regrets moving from a six-day to a five-day workweek in 1986. This statement has sparked a broader conversation about the nature of work in India and the significance of balancing professional and personal life.
