China Rejects Trump's Election Meddling Claims, Calls Them Baseless
By Global Leaders Insights Team | Jul 17, 2026
China has dismissed US President Donald Trump's allegations that Beijing interfered in the 2020 US presidential election, describing the claims as "groundless" and urging the United States to stop making accusations without evidence.
The response came after Trump said newly declassified intelligence documents showed China had tried to influence the 2020 election. Beijing rejected the allegations, saying it has always followed a policy of not interfering in the domestic affairs of other countries.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Trump's claims had no factual basis and accused the US of using China for political purposes. He reiterated that China has never interfered in US elections and has no interest in influencing the country's political process.

Lin said China has consistently respected the principle of non-interference and called on Washington to view relations between the two countries in an
objective and rational manner. He added that making repeated accusations without evidence only damages mutual trust and creates unnecessary tensions.
Trump claimed the declassified intelligence documents showed that China had attempted to influence the 2020 election in favour of then-candidate Joe Biden. However, no detailed evidence was made public to support the allegations. The remarks quickly drew attention in both Washington and Beijing, adding another point of disagreement between the two governments.
China maintained that domestic political issues in the United States should not be used as a reason to blame other countries. Officials stressed that such claims do not help improve US-China relations and instead make diplomatic engagement more difficult.
Dispute Adds to Bilateral Tensions
The latest exchange comes as the United States and China continue to manage differences over trade, technology, security and regional influence. Although both sides have made efforts to keep communication channels open, political disputes continue to test the relationship.
Analysts say election-related accusations are particularly sensitive because they deepen existing mistrust between the two countries. They note that disagreements over issues such as tariffs, semiconductor restrictions, artificial intelligence, and the South China Sea have already strained ties in recent years.
The allegations have also revived debate over the 2020 US election. Earlier assessments by US intelligence agencies concluded that while China considered various influence activities, there was no evidence that it directly interfered with voting systems or changed election results. Trump's latest comments have brought those findings back into public discussion.
Beijing did not indicate whether the controversy would affect future diplomatic engagement between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Instead, Chinese officials reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining dialogue based on mutual respect and equal treatment.

Observers believe the latest dispute highlights how quickly domestic political issues in either country can spill over into international relations. As the United States and China continue to compete on economic, technological and strategic fronts, both governments are likely to face growing challenges in keeping political disagreements from affecting broader cooperation.
