Carney vows new government will fiercely defend national sovereignty

Mark Carney, now prime minister of Canada, said at the cabinet swearing-in that the government will do everything to safeguard the country and resolve problems with the U.S.
Just two weeks ago, Carney won mostly because of fears sparked by Trump, whose tariffs and talk of ownership of Canada caused a political earthquake in the country. Being a former central banker, Carney used his experience handling major economic challenges to persuade voters that he could best challenge Trump, whose tariffs have caused Canadian unemployment.
"Canadians elected this new government with a strong mandate to define a new economic and security relationship with the United States," Carney said in a statement before his new ministers took their oaths.
Addressing reporters after the ceremony, with a cabinet of Liberal Party loyalists assembled behind him, Carney said his "government will work relentlessly to keep Canada secure as a sovereign nation."
Carney's new cabinet features many of the same people who worked on tariff talks with the US, but with some changes in job titles. After managing talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in the last few weeks, Dominic LeBlanc has been named the minister in charge of Canada-US trade. Melanie Joly, who was former foreign minister, has been appointed as industry minister, and Anita Anand is now the top diplomat. The post of Finance Minister will be held by Francois-Philippe Champagne.
Evan Solomon, who is a well-known former journalist making his parliamentary debut, has been given the new portfolio of Minister for Artificial Intelligence, which reflects Carney’s plan to transform the Canadian economy. Carney said his cabinet will be focused on a "core mission," which is "to create the strongest economy in the G7."
