Cambodia intends to nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, Deputy Prime Minister Chanthol said on Friday. The nomination comes in recognition of Trump’s key role in ending a recent border conflict with Thailand that left at least 43 people dead and displaced more than 300,000.
When asked to confirm the plan, Chanthol simply replied, “Yes.” Speaking to reporters in Phnom Penh, he expressed gratitude for Trump’s efforts to promote peace between nations, saying the president deserves the prestigious award. The ceasefire, finalized in Malaysia on Monday, halted the worst fighting between Cambodia and Thailand in over a decade, thanks to a crucial phone call from Trump last week.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt took to X to celebrate the truce, crediting Trump and writing, “Give him the Nobel Peace Prize!” Cambodia’s appreciation goes beyond diplomacy. Chanthol, who also leads trade negotiations, noted that the U.S. lowered a proposed 49% tariff on Cambodian goods to 19%, protecting the country’s vital garment and footwear industries from economic disaster.

This is the third time Trump has been backed for the Nobel Peace Prize this year. In June, Pakistan praised his work in easing tensions with India, and last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated him. The Nobel Peace Prize honors those who make outstanding contributions to global unity.

The Cambodia-Thailand border clash, fueled by long-standing disputes, raged for five days, devastating communities. Trump’s diplomatic intervention helped secure the ceasefire, earning high praise from Cambodian leaders. “We’re thankful for his tremendous work toward peace,” Chanthol said.
As Cambodia moves forward with its nomination, the world awaits the Nobel Committee’s decision, expected later this year. Trump’s growing list of endorsements highlights his influence on international peace efforts.
