By Global Leaders Insights Team | Mar 09, 2026
Australia has instructed the family members and dependents of its diplomatic staff in the United Arab Emirates to evacuate as the Middle East conflict intensifies, raising safety concerns and disrupting travel across the region.
The Australian government’s directive follows a sharp escalation in hostilities after U.S.–Israeli military strikes on Iran and retaliatory Iranian missile and drone attacks on multiple Gulf cities, including the UAE.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that the security situation had worsened to a level requiring caution, prompting updated travel advice urging Australians to avoid travel to the UAE and advising those already in the region to leave if possible.

Over 1,700 Australians have returned home on commercial flights from the UAE, but around 115,000 Australians remained in the Middle East when the conflict erupted, highlighting the evacuation challenge. The order specifically targets non-essential personnel, allowing for continued diplomatic operations.
The U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi also issued a security alert urging American citizens to consider leaving the UAE and temporarily suspended consular services as the crisis deepens, reflecting broader concern for Western nationals in the Gulf.
The violence has disrupted global travel and energy markets, with airline stocks falling sharply and oil prices spiking amidst the uncertainty. Aviation firms and passengers face mounting logistical issues as Gulf transit routes are curtailed or closed.
The conflict has deeply affected civilians, with reports of displacement and danger. In Lebanon, long-time resident Hussain Khrais fled his hometown again, a reminder of the instability caused by the ongoing Middle East crisis.
