Amazon is restructuring its artificial intelligence leadership, with Rohit Prasad, head of its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division, set to leave the company by the end of 2025 as part of a broader overhaul of its AI and advanced technology teams. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the changes reflect an “inflection point” in how the company approaches emerging technologies.

Under the reorganisation, Amazon is integrating its AGI unit with other high-end technology divisions, including custom silicon chip development and quantum computing, under a newly expanded leadership structure. Peter DeSantis, a 27-year veteran of Amazon and a senior vice president at Amazon Web Services (AWS), will lead the new group, which will focus on driving AI model development, chip innovation and next-generation technologies.
In addition, renowned AI researcher Pieter Abbeel, who joined Amazon through its acquisition of robotics startup Covariant, will head the frontier model research team within the reorganised unit, further strengthening Amazon’s technical capabilities in artificial intelligence and robotics.

Prasad, who joined Amazon in 2013 and played a key role in developing Alexa’s voice-assistant technology and the company’s Nova family of AI models, will step down as part of the transition. Amazon’s leadership shift comes amid intense competition in the AI sector from rivals such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, as well as continued investment in cloud-based AI services and computing infrastructure.
Andy Jassy emphasised that the unified organisational structure will sharpen execution, accelerate innovation, and better position Amazon to deliver “meaningful capabilities” for customers as artificial intelligence becomes central to its long-term technological strategy.
