Albanese Apologises After Kylie Minogue Podcast Remarks Spark Backlash
By Global Leaders Insights Team | Jul 06, 2026
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has apologised after facing criticism for comments he made about Australian pop star Kylie Minogue during a comedy podcast.
The remarks, made while taking part in a light-hearted game, sparked backlash from opposition politicians and women's groups, who said they were inappropriate for a serving prime minister.
The controversy comes just days before Albanese begins an important diplomatic visit to the Pacific, shifting attention away from government priorities.
Although senior ministers defended his overall record on gender equality, the prime minister admitted he had made a mistake and offered an unreserved apology.

Podcast Remarks Draw Political Backlash
The controversy began during an appearance on comedian Nikki Osborne's podcast, where Albanese was invited to play a version of the popular "marry, date or shag" game using the names of three well-known Australian women, including singer Kylie Minogue.
At first, Albanese hesitated and pointed out that he had recently married. However, after being encouraged to answer, he chose Minogue. When asked if he would marry, date or have sex with the singer, he replied, "All of the above."
The clip quickly spread across television, news websites and social media, drawing criticism from politicians and women's advocacy groups. Many argued that the comments objectified women and did not reflect the level of professionalism expected from Australia's prime minister.
Opposition politicians said Anthony Albanese should have declined to participate in the game altogether. Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson described the remarks as disrespectful and embarrassing, while others questioned his judgment in taking part in the segment. As the discussion gained momentum, the issue became one of the country's biggest political controversy stories of the day.
Apology Aims to End the Controversy
Facing growing criticism, Albanese issued a brief statement through his office on Monday.
"I apologise unequivocally for the comments," the prime minister said, offering a clear and unconditional public apology without attempting to defend his actions. Kylie Minogue's representatives did not immediately comment on the incident.
Senior government ministers later defended Albanese's broader record on women's issues. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said the government had consistently supported gender equality, pointing to its equal representation of men and women in the federal cabinet.
Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek also highlighted Albanese's long-standing support for policies that benefit women but chose not to comment extensively on the podcast appearance before the apology was released.
Australian political leaders often appear on podcasts and entertainment programmes to connect with voters in a more relaxed setting. However, the latest incident has highlighted the risks that come with informal interviews, where casual conversations can quickly become media backlash.

The episode has renewed debate about the standards expected from Australian politics and whether leaders should take part in entertainment segments involving personal or provocative questions. While Albanese has moved quickly to apologise, the incident serves as a reminder that even off-the-cuff remarks can attract significant public scrutiny and overshadow the government's broader agenda.
