Chinese President Xi Jinping led a grand military parade in Tiananmen Square to mark 80 years since Japan’s defeat in World War II.
Joined by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Xi spoke about the world facing a choice between “peace or war,” stressing China’s desire to stand for what’s right.
The huge event, mostly skipped by Western leaders, showed off China’s military strength and its growing influence, especially as tensions rise over U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs and unpredictable policies.
The 70-minute display dazzled 50,000 spectators with fighter jets roaring overhead, hypersonic missiles rolling by, and tanks rumbling through.

As 80,000 doves were released into the sky, Xi, dressed in a traditional Mao suit, welcomed over 20 world leaders, including Indonesia’s Prabowo Subianto and Slovakia’s Robert Fico, the only EU leader there. The parade sent a clear message: China is pushing for a new global order, challenging U.S.-led alliances.
Putin and Kim, both at odds with the West over Russia’s war in Ukraine and North Korea’s nuclear program, were the star guests. Experts are watching closely for signs of tighter military ties, especially after recent Russia-North Korea and China-North Korea agreements. Kim’s presence—his first at a Chinese military parade in 66 years—alongside his daughter Ju Ae, hints at stronger bonds with Beijing. Putin, meanwhile, signed new energy deals with China, and Kim likely feels more supported in his nuclear ambitions.
Beijing was locked down tight, with roads and schools closed for weeks of rehearsals. Local officials worked hard to keep things calm, showing Xi’s firm grip on the military. Taiwan called the parade’s $5 billion price tag wasteful, pointing to China’s domestic struggles.

On Truth Social, Trump brushed off the parade as no big deal but claimed Xi, Putin, and Kim were plotting against the U.S., while reminding everyone of America’s role in China’s WWII victory. The parade highlights Xi’s ambition to reshape global power, raising questions about the future in the Asia-Pacific.
