President Donald Trump touched down in Britain late Tuesday for a rare second state visit, a big deal for any U.S. leader, aimed at tightening the close bond between the U.S. and UK.
Joined by First Lady Melania Trump, he arrived at London Stansted Airport, where Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Viscount Henry Hood welcomed him. The visit, full of royal flair and major business deals, comes as both countries tackle their own challenges at home.
On Wednesday, King Charles III will roll out the red carpet at Windsor Castle with a grand ceremony, complete with a carriage ride, gun salutes, and a fancy state banquet. It’s the biggest military welcome in recent years, showing Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s eagerness to use Trump’s fondness for royalty to strengthen ties. Trump called the visit a “huge honor” and highlighted his friendship with King Charles, noting how rare it is for a U.S. president to get a second state visit.

This trip follows a rough patch for Starmer, who recently fired his U.S. ambassador, Peter Mandelson, over links to Jeffrey Epstein, and is dealing with political heat at home. For Trump, it’s a chance to shift focus from the recent loss of his friend Charlie Kirk. On the economic front, the visit is a win, with the U.S. and UK announcing over $10 billion in energy and tech deals, including a $700 million investment by BlackRock in UK data centers. A new “Transatlantic Taskforce,” led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, will boost financial cooperation.

On Thursday, Trump will head to Starmer’s Chequers estate for talks on trade, tariffs on British steel, and global issues like Ukraine. While protests are planned in London and Windsor, Trump’s schedule keeps him away from public events. The visit, blending diplomacy and spectacle, aims to align the UK’s tech, energy, and financial sectors with the U.S., fueling growth in uncertain times.
