Trump Hosts Polish President Nawrocki at White House

President Donald Trump welcomed Polish President Karol Nawrocki to the White House today for Nawrocki’s first official trip abroad since taking office last month.
The two leaders, both known for their conservative, nationalist views, focused their talks on Russia’s war in Ukraine and strengthening energy and defense ties. Trump’s backing of Nawrocki during Poland’s recent election was key to his narrow victory over the candidate supported by Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Their discussions zeroed in on the stalled peace talks in Ukraine and Poland’s concerns about its security, given its borders with Russia and Ukraine. Nawrocki, a strong critic of Russian actions, stressed the importance of a stronger U.S. military presence in Poland to counter potential threats from Moscow.

“The success of Nawrocki’s relationship with Trump hinges on increased U.S. commitment to Poland’s security,” said Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, pointing to Trump’s deal-making style. Poland, a key NATO ally, has been buying American weapons like F-35 jets and Abrams tanks and recently secured a $4-billion loan to purchase more.
The visit wasn’t without tension. Nawrocki’s rocky relationship with Tusk, whose pro-European government controls Poland’s foreign policy, created some friction. Trump’s choice to include Nawrocki in a recent Ukraine-focused call, bypassing Tusk, stirred controversy. Nawrocki also raised eyebrows by leaving out foreign ministry officials from his delegation, a break from tradition that drew criticism from Tusk’s team. Still, Nawrocki pushed to deepen U.S.-Poland ties, especially on defense and energy, with talks about a new nuclear power plant project led by U.S. company Westinghouse-Bechtel.

The visit featured a ceremonial air show with U.S. military planes, highlighting the strong alliance between the two nations. As Nawrocki works through Poland’s divided politics, his growing bond with Trump could play a big role in shaping U.S.-Poland relations and addressing challenges in the region.
