OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has promised to make GPT-5 “warmer” after users complained that the latest model feels less witty, creative, and relatable than its predecessors. He acknowledged that the team underestimated how much people valued aspects of GPT-4o, despite GPT-5’s superior performance in many technical areas.
Key Highlights
- Sam Altman pledges a “warmer” GPT-5 after feedback that it lacks wit and warmth.
- GPT-4o access restored for Plus users amid backlash, while free users remain limited to GPT-5.
The launch of GPT-5 also triggered controversy when OpenAI removed access to older models, including GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.5. Following user backlash, GPT-4o was reinstated but only for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, while free users remain restricted to GPT-5.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5 is faster, more accurate, and less prone to hallucinations or excessive agreeableness, with improvements in coding, reasoning, writing, healthcare queries, and multimodal tasks. However, social media feedback suggests it can be slower and produce shorter, emotionally shallow responses compared to earlier models.

Altman said the company will first complete GPT-5’s rollout and stabilize it before making changes to improve warmth. Over time, OpenAI plans to introduce per-user customization, allowing preferences for different interaction styles—ranging from emoji-rich replies to purely logical or emotionally intelligent responses—ensuring ChatGPT can adapt to individual communication needs.
