Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Russia will never bow to pressure from the United States or any other country. He also warned that any deep strikes on Russian soil would face a “very serious, if not overwhelming” response.

Speaking at a meeting of the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow, Putin brushed off U.S. sanctions as “unfriendly” moves that won’t hurt Russia much. “They won’t seriously harm our economy,” he said, adding that Russia’s energy sector remains strong.

“No country or people with self-respect makes decisions under pressure,” Putin said, calling the sanctions an attempt to force Russia’s hand. He pointed out that disrupting global energy markets could drive up prices, which would be tough for the U.S., especially with its own political events coming up.

Putin responded to a Wall Street Journal report that the Trump administration has eased limits on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles supplied by Western allies. He also mentioned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s claim that Ukraine is developing missiles with a 3,000-kilometer range.

“This is an attempt to escalate the conflict,” Putin said. “But if those weapons are used against Russian territory, our response will be very serious. They should think carefully.”
