Pope Leo XIV Urges Peace in Sudan: "End Violence, Allow Aid"

Pope Leo XIV stood in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday and spoke with a heavy heart about the war tearing Sudan apart. “I am deeply saddened,” he told the crowd, “by the violence against women, children, and helpless civilians.”
The pope was talking about the fall of El Fasher, the last city in Darfur still held by Sudan’s army. Just over a week ago, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) stormed in after an 18-month siege. Tens of thousands fled. Many didn’t make it. The United Nations says hundreds of civilians were killed in the chaos.
"Indiscriminate violence against women and children, attacks on defenceless civilians and serious obstacles to humanitarian action are causing unacceptable suffering," Pope Leo stated, his voice steady but laced with anguish. He implored warring factions to halt hostilities and open "humanitarian corridors" for desperately needed aid, warning that the blockade has left millions on the brink of famine.

Sudan’s war began in April 2023 when the army and the RSF turned on each other. More than 10 million people have been forced from their homes. Children are starving. Aid trucks sit at borders, turned away by fighters.
The pope also mentioned Tanzania, where protests after a disputed election left dozens dead. "Walk the path of dialogue," he said.
The Vatican has quietly sent diplomats to Sudan, but peace talks stall. World leaders promised $2 billion in Geneva last month—if the fighting stops long enough to let supplies through.

As cold weather nears, Pope Leo XIV asked everyone to act. "Act decisively and generously to support relief efforts." For millions in Sudan, hope rests on whether anyone listens.
