Netanyahu Slams Australian PM as Tensions Rise Over Visa Dispute
By Global Leaders Insights Team | Aug 20, 2025

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu didn’t hold back, blasting Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as a “weak leader who’s let down Israel and Australia’s Jewish community.” The sharp words, posted on Netanyahu’s X account, come as a bitter feud unfolds between the two countries.
The drama kicked off when Australia canceled the visa of Simcha Rothman, a right-wing Israeli politician from Netanyahu’s coalition, on Monday.
Australian officials worried Rothman’s visit could stir up trouble, especially since he planned to meet with Australia’s Jewish community, which has faced a 316% surge in antisemitic incidents since October 2023, according to the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. In retaliation, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar pulled visas for Australian diplomats working with the Palestinian Authority, accusing Australia of fueling antisemitism.

This clash ties into bigger tensions over the Gaza war, sparked by Hamas’ attack on Israel in October 2023. Albanese, who’s been vocal about recognizing a Palestinian state at the UN, has called out Netanyahu for ignoring Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong fired back, saying Israel’s visa move was “uncalled for” and warning that Netanyahu’s actions are pushing Israel away from its allies.
Australia’s Jewish community is split. The Australian Jewish Association called the visa ban “spiteful” and plans to host Rothman online instead. But the Zionist Federation of Australia, while disagreeing with Rothman’s hardline stance, said banning him wasn’t the answer.
Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stood firm, saying, “Real strength isn’t about causing harm.” Meanwhile, Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid slammed Netanyahu, arguing he’s just handed Albanese a political victory by picking this fight.

The row could hurt ties between Australia and Israel, which share $2 billion in trade and security partnerships. Jewish leaders are urging both sides to cool off and protect their long-standing friendship.
